PHOENIX – Clothing retailer Charlotte Russe is shutting down its stores — seven in metro Phoenix — and begun liquidation sales Thursday, a month after filing for bankruptcy.

The young women’s fashion chain posted a note on its website announcing the online store had closed and that a going-out-business sale would begin at all stores.

There are seven stores in the Valley: Tempe Marketplace; Arizona Mills, Tempe; Scottsdale Fashion Square; Tanger Outlets, Glendale; Arrowhead Towne Center, Glendale; SanTan Village, Gilbert and Superstition Springs Center, Mesa.

Court documents noted that the sale would end no later than April 30, according to a USA Today report.

Charlotte Russe had announced in early February it would close 94 of the 500 stores. A year ago, the company had reworked deals on some debts.

About 8,700 employees work for the chain, which was founded in 1975.

The abrupt announcement came a day after struggling big-box discounters Family Dollar said it was closing 390 stores, but didn’t make a list available of which sites.

There are about 8,200 Family Dollar stores across the country and more than two dozen in the Valley.

We want to hear from you.
