PHOENIX – A team of high school students from a Valley charter school earned a spot in the finals of a major national science contest.

A Chandler Basis squad won the Arizona regional of the annual National Science Bowl competition Saturday at the Arizona State University West campus in Glendale.

It was the second consecutive year Chandler Basis won the state regional and earned a berth in the national finals, which will be held April 25-29 in Washington, D.C.

In fact, Saturday’s final round came down to two Chandler Basis teams.

The Arizona tournament was one of 111 middle school and high school regional being held nationwide from January through March.

Competitors have to answer questions in a range of science topics, including biology, chemistry, physics and math, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Energy, which sponsors the event.

Chandler Basis also will compete in Arizona’s middle school regional, which will take place March 9 at ASU West.

At nationals, the top 16 high school teams and top 16 middle school teams will earn $1,000 for their schools’ science departments.

The top two high school squads will also receive a grand prize to be announced. Last year’s prize winners were sent on science trips in Alaska.

In 28 years, nearly 300,000 students have participated in the contest, the release said.
