PHOENIX — It was a snow day plus for parts of metro Phoenix on Thursday and Friday.

While most everyone else in the Valley sloshed through a day of record rainfall, others in slightly higher elevations watched hail and snow come down.

An inch or so of snow fell from Anthem to Cave Creek to north Scottsdale and Fountain Hills.

“It may not be much but it’s still pretty impressive considering that’s not something we regularly see,” ABC 15 meteorologist Iris Hermosillo said Friday on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News.

Tonto Hills in Carefree welcomed 12 inches, the National Weather Service in Phoenix estimated. The area north of McDowell Mountain Regional Park had 9 inches and Fountain Hills had up to 4 inches.

Happy and amazed residents from the snow sites posted photos on social media.

Larry Hopper with the National Weather Service in Phoenix said there had been a report of 6 inches of flakes east of Carefree.

“That’s about 3,000 feet [elevation],” he said.

There had been 1 1/2 inches of “very slushy snow” at Troon North in the Pinnacle Peak area of Scottsdale.

The snow drifted into town from the big storm that walloped Flagstaff — nearly 36 inches piled up in the northern Arizona city, a single-day record.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Jim Cross contributed to this report.
