PHOENIX — Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course in Tempe will close in May as part of a long-anticipated move to transfer the men’s and women’s golf teams to a Phoenix course.

Golfers can tee off at the course near Rio Salado Parkway and Rural Road one last time May 5, general manager Derek Crawford told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday. The course first opened on Sept. 15, 1989.

The closure of the course also paved the way for the development of the Novus Innovation Corridor, a 330-acre mixed-use development that includes athletic facilities for the university and the community.

“The entire ASU community feels great nostalgia for Karsten,” Ray Anderson, vice president for university athletics, said in a statement.

“It has been an asset to the university and the ASU golf program. The philanthropy associated with this contribution is now being leveraged and maximized to do even more for Sun Devil Athletics. We are grateful to the ASU supporters whose commitment has made the creation and operation of Karsten possible.”

Thunderbirds Golf Complex at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix will be the new home for the golfers. The 7,000-square foot facility near 52nd Street and McDowell Road was unveiled in November.
