PHOENIX – A pair of camels spotted outside a home near Tucson were reunited with their owners Tuesday.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 7 p.m. Monday about camels on the loose near Sahuarita, Deputy James Allerton told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday.

When authorities reached the neighborhood, they indeed saw two camels running in the street.

The camels were corralled and hadn’t done any damage to the property.

“I’ve never heard of a [micro]chip in a camel, but I don’t come across a lot of camels,” Allerton said.

Pima County sheriff’s officials told The Associated Press late Tuesday that authorities had successfully located the owners.

Deputies handle plenty of calls about livestock running loose, Allerton said. This call, though, was unusual.

“It isn’t necessarily a dangerous situation, although I’ve heard camels can become aggressive if they’re frightened or approached in the wrong manner.”

Four years ago, two llamas ran the streets of Sun City for part of an afternoon.

They had been brought to a nursing home to cheer up residents but the animals got loose on the trip back and their escapade became a viral sensation.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Amy Phol and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
