PHOENIX – Distance runners will be pounding the pavement across an East Valley city at the Sprouts Mesa-PHX Marathon starting Saturday morning.

The race, in its eighth year, is among the most popular qualifiers for the Boston Marathon.

The full and half marathons and the 10K run will start at 6:30 a.m. A 1K kids’ run will start at noon at Mesa Riverview Plaza.

The marathon route will take participants from Usery Mountain Recreation Area near Loop 202 and Crismon Road and finish at the plaza near the loop and Alma School Road.

In between runners will go down McDowell Road, past four golf courses, down Val Vista Drive, across Brown Road, down Mesa Drive and into downtown before hitting the finish line just off Rio Salado Parkway.

Closures will be in place along the 26.2-mile route. Streets will be shut down from 4 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m.
