PHOENIX – A small business owner and political newcomer from the Navajo Nation will watch the presidential State of the Union address Tuesday night, courtesy of U.S. Rep. Tom O’Halleran of Arizona.
Myron Lizer, vice president of the Navajo Nation, went into office with President Jonathan Nez in the November election.
“My priorities this year include working on important infrastructure projects that promote economic growth for Navajo communities and Indian Nations and Tribes in Arizona and across the country,” O’Halleran said in a statement.
“I am proud of the strong relationship we have built between my office and the Navajo Nation, and I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress and this Administration to uphold our treaty obligations.”
Lizer owns a hardware store that serves Window Rock, Fort Defiance and St. Michaels. He grew up in Fort Defiance in eastern Arizona.
He had not held a political office before he and Nez were sworn in last month.
Last month, O’Halleran, a Democrat, and Republican Tom Cole of Oklahoma, introduced the bipartisan Native Youth and Tribal Officer Protection Act.
The bill was designed to “ensure children and law enforcement in tribal communities are protected in instances of domestic violence.”
O’Halleran represents Arizona’s First Congressional District, which covers much of the Navajo Nation.
