PHOENIX — Customers for one Arizona utility company will see a slight reduction in their monthly electricity bills starting in February.

Arizona Public Service announced Thursday that it would lower electricity costs by an average of $3 per month for each of the households it services.

“When we have an opportunity to take either energy from California — when they have access solar energy, sometimes they will pay us to take that — or if natural gas prices come down, it results in overall reduced operating costs and we can pass those savings along to our customers,” spokeswoman Kerri Carnes told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday.

Carnes said some customers can apply for assistance programs to help them save more.

The company also set aside $500,000 earlier this month for federal employees who struggled to pay their bills due to the government shutdown.

The Arizona Corporation Commission voted earlier this month to begin an audit and rate review of the company following complaints of increased electricity bills.

The utility company serves about 2.7 million people in 11 of the state’s 15 counties.
