Northern Arizona police say armed man barricaded in car now in custody

PHOENIX — Authorities in a northern Arizona town said an armed man who barricaded himself in his car was in custody after an hours-long standoff Wednesday.
The incident in a Safeway parking lot near Route 66 and Seventh Street in Williams started around 12:30 p.m., the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a press release.
The episode ended after the man, identified as Matthew Solan, shot himself in the leg before surrendering at around 6:30 p.m., the release said.
He’d locked himself in the vehicle after being stopped by officers who were investigating a claim that he’d held somebody at gunpoint Monday night, the release said.

Authorities secured the area and placed nearby schools and businesses on lockdown while Solan refused to get out.
He was hospitalized after being taken into custody.
Solan was booked on multiple charges, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, weapons violations, resisting arrest and probation violation.
The Williams Police Department initially said in a Facebook post that there was an “armed subject that is highly dangerous” in the area.
According to the Williams News, a SWAT team was at the scene.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Northern Arizona Tactical Team were assisting in the investigation.
Williams is about 35 miles west of Flagstaff.
