PHOENIX — A busy Tempe intersection was closed Tuesday afternoon following a collision involving a police SUV.
At around 3:15 p.m., the Tempe Police Department said the intersection of University Drive and Rural Road would be closed in all directions for hours.
The police vehicle was traveling westbound on University with its lights flashing and sirens sounding, Tempe Police Sgt. Ron Elcock told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
A vehicle traveling southbound on Rural struck the police vehicle, which struck another vehicle that then struck a bicyclist.
Four people were hospitalized with injures that were not life-threatening. The officer driving the vehicle was in good condition, Elcock said.
The police vehicle was responding to an incident near 48th Street and Baseline Road that ended with a Tempe officer fatally shooting an armed man who ran from police.
No other information was immediately made available.
Tempe Police advised motorists to avoid the area, which borders Arizona State University.
