PHOENIX – They aren’t the fanciest or trendiest restaurants around, but they aren’t to be missed.
Business review website Yelp included six Arizona dining establishments on its 2019 list of the top 100 places to eat in the United States: Worth Takeaway, Kodo Sushi, Homer’s Smokehouse BBQ, Cocina Madrigal, Momo Bowl and Not Your Typical Deli.
The sixth annual list highlights a wide variety of restaurants that earned the highest marks in Yelp’s crowd-sourced reviews.
The website said it “considered both the rating and the volume of the reviews, while accounting for the overall volume of reviews in each business’s area so as not to disadvantage businesses in areas with relatively low review volume.”
Worth Takeaway in Mesa leads the state’s contingent at No. 14 on the list. The breakfast, brunch and sandwich shop received five stars in 495 of the 577 reviews posted as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Holy smokes! Totally blown away by this charming li’l spot on Main Street in Downtown Mesa. It was everything we expected and then some,” wrote Yelp reviewer Stephanie P.
Up next is No. 26 Kodo Sushi Sake in Scottsdale, which has five stars in 422 out of 464 reviews.
“Amazing! I can understand why it’s so high-rated all around. The sushi is excellent quality, the service is kind and attentive,” wrote Elisabetta P.
Homer’s Smokehouse BBQ, a family-owned spot in San Tan Valley, checked in at No. 39, with five stars in 119 out of 129 reviews.
“The service doesn’t get friendlier, nor could the food be any better! This place has the best BBQ and fixings west of the Mississippi. Period,” wrote Chris P.
No. 68 on the list is Cocina Madrigal, a south Phoenix Mexican restaurant with five stars in 285 of its 308 reviews.
“Truly spectacular experience for Oaxacan-style Mexican food. This place is truly special,” wrote Doug B.
A few spots lower was No. 76 Momo Bowl, a Japanese restaurant with five stars in all but three of its 56 reviews.
“It really is authentic Japanese food and I could not be happier,” wrote Jackie J.
Rounding out the state’s presence is No. 83 Not Your Typical Deli, a Gilbert eatery that creates opportunities for employees with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Of its 428 reviews, 379 gave five stars.
“Sandwiches are great and salads are large and delicious. Service is always amazing!” wrote Elaine B.
Only three Arizona restaurants made the 2018 list: Phoenix’s Little Miss BBQ at No. 2, Mesa’s Green Corner Restaurant at No. 85 and Phoenix’s Ten Handcrafted American Fares and Spirits at No. 100.
