PHOENIX — A suspect was shot and injured after allegedly pulling a knife and advancing toward a Maricopa County Sheriff’s sergeant Monday night.
Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said in a statement that the suspect, identified later as 18-year old Ismail Hamed, called 911 saying he wanted to talk to a deputy at the substation near Palisades and Saguaro boulevards in Fountain Hills.
An unnamed sergeant then contacted the suspect outside of the substation around 5:30 p.m., shortly before Hamed allegedly started throwing rocks at him.
Hamed then allegedly “brandished a knife and advanced towards the sergeant, despite his repeated commands for him to drop the weapon,” Enriquez said.
The sergeant then shot the suspect. Hamed was given first aid on the scene and was transported to a hospital.
Hamed was booked into Fourth Avenue Jail on Tuesday on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The sergeant was identified as a 12-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.
It was the first MCSO-involved shooting of 2019.
