PHOENIX — In a ranking of the best cities for an active lifestyle, Arizona’s fell toward the bottom of the list.
Wallethub ranked Tucson as the best Arizona city for an active lifestyle, coming in at No. 30 nationally.
Scottsdale came in at No. 37, followed by No. 43 Phoenix, No. 54 Glendale, No. 72 Mesa, No. 78 Chandler and No. 87 Gilbert.
Wallethub ranked the cities across two dimensions — budget and participation, and sports and outdoors — using 38 metrics, including average monthly fitness club fee, park acreage, and sporting goods stores and hiking trails per capita.
The top three best cities for an active lifestyle were Honolulu, Chicago and San Francisco.
Bakersfield, California; North Las Vegas; and Hialeah, Florida, made up the bottom three.
Gilbert came in last place for basketball hoops per capita and fell to the bottom five for park playgrounds per capita.
Mesa and Gilbert were both ranked in the bottom five for tennis courts per capita.
However, swimming and golf bumped Arizona to the top — Tucson was tied first for most swimming pools per capita, and Gilbert, Scottsdale, Chandler, Mesa and Glendale were all tied with St. Paul, Minnesota, for most public golf courses per capita.
