PHOENIX — A suspect was shot and killed by Phoenix police on Friday after allegedly attempting to burglarize an apartment in the area.

Sgt. Mercedes Fortune with the Phoenix Police Department said officers were called to the complex in the area of 51st Avenue and Thunderbird Road after a 15-year-old girl reported the burglary.

Fortune said the girl was in the apartment when she heard the suspect in the apartment and hid under her bed while she called 911 and her mother.

After police arrived to the apartment, the girl noticed the suspect still inside the building. When she yelled for officers, the suspect fled the apartment.

Fortune said the suspect initially was compiling with commands, but then allegedly reached back for a gun and was shot by officers.

The suspect was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, but later died. Neither the victim nor any officers were injured.

The suspect was identified as a 46-year-old Edwin C. Bundy. He was not known to the victim.

It was the 44th officer-involved shooting in the city in 2018.

The 43rd officer-involved shooting in Phoenix this year occurred last week when police shot and killed a man they said attacked an officer.

Last year, there were 21 officer-involved shootings in Phoenix. The previous record was 33 in 2013.
