PHOENIX — The New Year’s Eve fireworks show at Hayden Butte in Tempe was canceled due to dry conditions.
Hayden Butte, aka “A Mountain”, was scheduled to host a five-minute fireworks display before officials determined the excess brush in the area combined with dry conditions created too much of a fire hazard.
In other environmental news, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality said pollutants in the air are expected to top limits set by federal health standards Monday.
They issued a similar advisory on Sunday.
It was not clear if the advisory would last through the new year but firework explosions could cause more issues for the environment.
ADEQ officials say the high pollution advisory is for fine particulate matter made up of small particles found in smoke.
The agency recommends that people limit outdoor activity while the pollution advisory is in effect, especially children and adults with respiratory issues.
