Sen. Jeff Flake leaves speculation of 2020 run on ‘The Late Show’

PHOENIX — On his way out of office, U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake appeared on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert to talk politics, of course.
Colbert confirmed with Flake that he had a couple of weeks left in office before proceeding to ask him about a statement from President Donald Trump via Twitter.
Trump has reportedly withdrawn 2,000 American troops from Syria and declared to have defeated ISIS, to which Flake disagreed.
“They are not quite defeated yet,” Flake said. “In fact, one agency of our government just less than a week ago put out a report saying that they’re still there and we need to be vigilant.”

The Republican called out Trump for making statements on Twitter without consulting lawmakers.
“Half the time, we wake up and see the tweets like everyone else — most of the time — and that’s the scary thing,” he said.
The small town native of Snowflake has pondered the idea of running for president in 2020 and has recently backed away. But Flake left some speculation when asked about running.
Colbert asked Flake if he would be interviewing him again in the next two years, alluding to the next election.
“If that’s what it takes to be here,” Flake responded jokingly. “You bet!”
