PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix shot and killed a man they said attacked an officer on the street Wednesday night.

It was the 43rd officer-involved shooting of the year in Phoenix and second this week.

Officers responded to a call from a convenience store near 36th Street and Thomas Road. A clerk at the store told them a man was throwing things at the window and had been arguing with people in the parking lot.

Police found the man nearby and began talking to him but eventually he pulled out a metal object, possibly a tool, from a jacket, and began swinging at officers, Sgt. Armando Carbajal said.

He hit one of them in the head and arm. As the suspect walked away, the second officer ordered the man to stop.

Instead, the unidentified suspect came back toward the second officer, arm raised and still holding the object, and charged.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital and treated for minor wounds. The officer has been released.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital.

No other information was immediately available.

Earlier this week, police shot a man who had been pointing a gun at traffic near 35th Avenue and Camelback Road.

Last year, Phoenix police were involved in 21 shootings.
