PHOENIX — Silas Stark is an author, public speaker and mindfulness educator, all at the age of 7.
The homeschooler wrote his book about meditation, called “Um Land,” after realizing he could use the technique to control difficult emotions when he was 6.
The book was self-published and hit bookshelves in November.
Silas will read from the book and sign copies at the Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The book contains scenarios that Silas believes are good times to meditate, which he calls “going to Um Land” — for example, he said in a YouTube video, “when you get stung by a bee.”
The book was born from a list Silas kept of these situations, which he one day recorded on his dad’s phone. His parents then helped him type out the manuscript.
Silas sent sample pages to artists on Fiver, an online marketplace for freelancers, and chose the book’s illustrations based on which ones made him laugh the most.
Since publication, he has been promoting his book at classroom, bookstore and other events.
