Arizona motorists will soon pay more to register their vehicles

PHOENIX — If you are planning on registering your vehicle in Arizona, you might want to do so soon.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that motorists in need of vehicle registration will see a new fee starting Saturday.
The fee, called a public safety fee, was established by state law to support public safety and highway patrol operations, the department said.
Most drivers in Arizona will pay $32 per vehicle each year, while street-legal golf carts and primarily off-highway vehicles will pay $5.
It will go into effect for registrations due in January and immediately for newly registered vehicles.
The cost to register a vehicle in Arizona varies depending on the value of the car, how long the registration will be valid for, whether an emissions test is needed and if any late fees are added.
No matter if drivers pay to register a vehicle each year, or pay for a two- or five-year registration, they will pay the entire amount up front for each registered year.
The fees will go toward funding for public safety and the maintenance and construction of Arizona’s highways.
