PHOENIX – More parking in the future at Horseshoe Bend, a popular Arizona tourist attraction, means less parking now, the National Park Service said.
The park service and the city of Page said the north parking lot at the Horseshoe Bend Overlook has been closed because of expansion construction, Lake Powell Life reported Monday.
The park service said although the parking area had been increased over the last few years, congestion remained high, causing safety concerns at the Glen Canyon Dam site.
The project, which began Nov. 1, was scheduled to be completed in March.
In the meantime, restrictions went into effect. No tour buses that carry more than 20 passengers will be allowed to park on site. They will have to unload at a designated area near the trail head, leave and return at a specific time for pickup.
Parking won’t be allowed along U.S. 89 and if visitors can’t find a spot, they will be told to leave and try again later.
The park service said the best times to visit were before 10 a.m. or between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., noting the lot could fill up sooner during holiday weekends.
Other improvements being made at the site included an American Disabilities Act trail, a viewing area and shade structures.
