PHOENIX – In 2005 and ’06, two men terrorized Phoenix in a string of drive-by shootings that left eight people dead and dozens injured.

One of the victims who survived, but suffered serious injuries, was Paul Patrick.

On Tuesday, more than 12 years later, Patrick died.

Retired Phoenix Police Detective Cliff Jewel said he considers Patrick the ninth murder victim of the serial shooters.

“In my opinion … I think it was directly related to his injuries,” Jewel told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona Morning News on Wednesday.

Jewel said he was saddened by Patrick’s death.

“I had spent so much time sitting with Paul and his mother during the trial, and we got to be good friends,” he said.

While Patrick suffered as a result of his injuries, Jewel said he “was always just a bright spot.”

“If you knew Paul you’d know that he had a spirit that didn’t let the shooting really hamper what he was doing,” Jewel said.

“His sense of humor was always great in the times that I visited him at home and in the hospital.”

Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman were convicted of a slew of crimes related to the shootings.

Patrick was wounded near 78th Avenue and Indian School Road in June 2006, two months before Hausner and Dieteman were arrested.

Hausner, who was found guilty of six murders, died on death row in 2013 after overdosing on antidepressants.

Dieteman received two life sentences after pleading guilty to two murders.

Jewel said the idea of prosecuting Dieteman for Patrick’s murder “should be looked at.”

However, he acknowledged it would be difficult to prove which of the killers actually shot Patrick and whether Dieteman was even present at the time.
