Phoenix police are searching for the suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Matthew Groves, who was believed to be killed in Phoenix in July.
Sgt. Jamie Rothschild said Groves was murdered in the area of 51st Avenue and Indian School Road around 4 a.m. on July 21.
Groves was last seen riding his skateboard on a nearby surveillance camera before going off camera. An unknown man was then seen riding a bike and disappearing off camera in the same direction.
The camera later captured the man riding his bike in the opposite direction, carrying a backpack that police believe belonged to Groves.
Rothschild said the video also shows there were other people in the area at the time who may have seen or heard something and could be the key to solving this case.
Groves’ mother, Katherine Kirkconnell, said she was devastated to learn that her son was a victim of murder.
“He was just so intuitive and so sensitive,” she said. “He was very smart and loving and loved conversation.”
He was the baby of the family, her only son, and was a really good baseball and football player in high school.
“It makes me very sick to know this person is still out there,” Kirkconnell said. “They’ve left the biggest hole in each of our lives.”
