Kyrsten Sinema shows respect for late John McCain in acceptance speech

PHOENIX — Kyrsten Sinema delivered an acceptance speech citing the inspiration of late Senator John McCain as an example of what Arizonans looked for in a senator.
“Sen. John McCain stood for everything we stand for as Arizonans: fighting for what you believe in, standing up for what’s right — even if you stand alone — and serving a cause that is greater than one’s self,” Sinema said.
She also noted how McCain’s positive outlook was something that helped move the country forward.
“He taught us to always assume the best in others, to seek compromise instead of sewing division and to always put country ahead of party,” she said. “Sen. McCain is irreplaceable but his example will guide our next steps forward.”
Sinema’s campaign emphasized working across party lines, something that helped McCain earn his nickname of “Maverick.”
McCain’s historic thumbs-down vote on the Republican attempt to pass a “skinny repeal” bill that would have permanently repealed the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate and other provisions was one example of his effort to work with the opposition.
Sinema has a record of working across party lines during her time in the House of Representatives voting 48.8 percent of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight.com, with the position supported by President Donald Trump, a Republican.

McCain served in the U.S. Senate from 1987-2018 and twice ran for president earning the Republican nomination in 2008.
“It’s up to all of us to carry on Sen. McCain’s legacy,” Sinema said.
