PHOENIX — Border Patrol agents at a checkpoint near Yuma seized more than 30 pounds of crystal methamphetamine worth $91,000 this week.

Five people, including a 25-year-old man from Mesa, were charged with transportation of a controlled substance. The amount of meth totaled more than 30 pounds.

Four of the smuggling suspects stopped at the Wellton Station checkpoint Wednesday were identified as being in the United States without permission.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers watched while four men got into a gray car driven by a fifth person — the Mesa man — who headed east on Interstate 8.

Agents stopped the car at the checkpoint and said they found two backpacks filled with the drugs.

The four suspected of entering the country from Mexico illegally were also processed for immigration violations.
