Man in custody as crews battle north Phoenix apartment building fire

PHOENIX — One man was in custody on Friday as firefighters and police officers battled a blaze at a north Phoenix apartment building.
Smoke poured from vents and other openings as firefighters streamed water into the building.
The two-story apartment building was destroyed and 21 residents were displaced.
No injuries were reported from the fire, but police Sgt. Armando Carbajal said the complex’s property manager suffered a cut on a hand during an encounter with a knife-wielding man in the unit where the fire occurred.
Crews have fire control on the apartment fire located at 15th Ave and Hatcher. Phoenix PD has a suspect in custody and firefighters are treating two patients with minor injuries.

The man’s identity was not immediately known.
Firefighters stopped the fire in a second-story unit from spreading to the seven other units but that smoke rendered them uninhabitable.
The fire was under control by 8 a.m.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. No additional information was immediately available.
The American Red Cross said it was responding to assist those affected by the fire.

The building is near North 14th Avenue and West Hatcher Road.
