PHOENIX – A New York-based health insurance startup is increasing its footprint in the East Valley by expanding its office space and hiring hundreds of new employees.

Two years after Oscar Health moved its member services team to The Circuit complex in Tempe near the Loop 101 and Loop 202 interchange, the company announced that it would be leasing an additional 46,000 square feet.

The expansion will push Oscar’s office space to 139,000 square feet, making room for an additional 400 jobs by 2020.

“We are proud that Tempe’s smart, dedicated workforce is part of Oscar’s fast growth and national success, and we appreciate the investment that Oscar is making in our community,” Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell said in a press release.

The technology-driven company plans to move into the new space in the summer of 2019.

The decision to expand its workforce comes as Oscar prepares to enter Arizona’s health care market.

With open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act underway, Oscar is offering plans in Maricopa County for the first time.

The Phoenix area is one of 14 new markets that Oscar will cover in 2019.

Oscar, which was founded in 2012, was No. 12 this year on CNBC’s annual Disruptor 50 list of private companies that are shaking up the business world.
