PRAGUE (AP) – The international airport in the Czech capital has been renamed to honor the late President Vaclav Havel.
More than 82,000 Czechs signed a petition demanding the change, which was approved by the government.
Havel was the dissident playwright who led the 1989 revolution that toppled four decades of communist rule before becoming the country’s president.
The name change took place on the 76th anniversary of Havel’s birthday. Havel’s widow, Dagmar, was present Friday at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Filmmaker Fero Fenic came up with the plan after Havel died on Dec. 18, 2011, aged 75.
