Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild said this robbery really could have turned ugly: “We’re really glad that no one got hurt.”

Two guys walked into the Family Dollar store at 25th Avenue and Van Buren Street on Oct. 10 just before 9 p.m.

“But one of them, who’s in a black Arizona Cardinals jersey, isn’t really looking at products,” Rothschild said. “He’s looking around the store like he’s trying to see who’s there.”

The other guy grabbed a laundry basket and started filling it with merchandise. At one point, one of the employees blocked the exit door and told another employee to call police. That’s when the men decided to make a run for it.

Rothschild said the first man started violently kicking the door and finally got out. The employee then grabbed the laundry basket being carried by the other suspect.

“That’s where the tug-of-war ensued. The suspect pulled away and ended-up pushing the clerk as well,” Rothschild said.

Both men left on bicycles.

Next, two downtown Phoenix coffee shop employees were brutally gunned down as they walked home from work.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said it happened early in the morning of Oct. 5, when 41-year-old David Bessent and 24-year-old Zachary Walter were walking near Third Avenue and Roosevelt Street.

“Mr. Walter died after he was transported to the hospital. Several days later, Mr. Bessent died,” Thomspon said.

The only information police have right now is that it appears there was a white Dodge Durango probably involved.

Thompson said as far as investigators know, these two men had no criminal ties and were completely innocent victims.
