PHOENIX — If you’re heading through the heart of Phoenix this weekend, you won’t be able to take southbound Interstate 17.

The stretch of I-17 that runs past the downtown area will be closed for pavement improvement work, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced.

The closure is scheduled from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 p.m. Sunday. It will begin at the I-10 “Stack” interchange and extend to the I-10 “Split” near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

“We have crews doing some work to seal cracks along the freeway,” ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Both I-10 ramps to I-17 will be shut down as part of the closure.

“We’re recommending that drivers think about staying on eastbound I-10 and using that through the downtown area because that will be your best bet to get to the area near Sky Harbor airport,” Nintzel said.

Northbound I-17 and the southbound frontage road in the area will remain open.

ADOT announced only one other restriction on Valley freeways this weekend.

The westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in Mesa will be reduced to two lanes near Greenfield Road for bridge repairs from 9 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Madison Spence contributed to this report.
