PR man arrested for carjacking that killed student
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – A Puerto Rican man has been arrested for his alleged role in the slaying of a high school student during an attempted carjacking.
U.S. prosecutors say Jordan Ayala Cruz was captured Monday on the U.S. territory. They allege he conspired with another man in late June to carjack a Lexus SUV driven by 17-year-old Stefano Steenbakkers.
U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez Velez alleges the pair followed the teen in another car and rear-ended his SUV trying to force him to stop. Steenbakkers called his mother, giving his location and the license plate of his attackers. His mother later found him fatally shot inside the SUV.
In May, the FBI and the Puerto Rico police joined forces to catch and prosecute carjacking criminals and clear a backlog of unsolved cases.
