PHOENIX — Voter registration numbers ahead of the 2018 general election are showing roughly 40,000 new voters registered in the final days of open voter registration from Oct. 1 through Oct. 9.

The late push for new voters has the total number of registrations in Arizona projected to be more than 3.7 million.

Voters in Arizona are not required to register for a particular party as they are in some other states and approximately 16,000 people registered to vote as something other than a Republican or Democrat.

Out of those new registered voters, 11,900 registered as Democrats, while 11,700 registered as Republicans.

That has shrunk the statewide Republican advantage in registered voters to a projected total of 140,000 more than Democrats.

According to an analyst for Arizona’s Office of the Secretary of State, 30,590 new voters registered as Democrat, while 29,907 have registered as Republican since Aug. 1.

In the totals from Aug. 1, Democrats registered more voters than Republicans in five out of nine congressional districts.

All nine seats Arizona holds in the House of Representatives are up for grabs during the 2018 general election.
