PHOENIX — Affordable housing was one of the top reasons cited for the inbound domestic migration explosion experienced in Maricopa County over the last five years.

According to RentCafe.com, Maricopa County has seen an uptick of domestic net migration by 221,000 people, almost double second-place Clark County, Nevada, which added 127,000 people. No other county in America has seen an uptick of more than 100,000 people.

Among the domestic migrants who have relocated across the country, 55 percent of them cited housing prices as the main reason for moving. Work reasons and family reasons accounted for a combined 34 percent, while 11 percent of people cited other reasons.

The average price of rent in Maricopa County was $1,100, which was $1,000 lower than the average rent in Los Angeles County, California – the city with the most domestic outbound migrations.

On the list of top 10 counties with the highest inbound domestic migration, only Wake County, North Carolina and Lee County, Florida are located east of the Mississippi River.

On the list of top 10 counties with the highest outbound domestic migration, four are located in New York and only two are located west of the Mississippi River. Those are Los Angeles County and Santa Clara County, California.
