PHOENIX — Former Mayor Greg Stanton, who is campaigning for a seat in the U.S. Congress, was robbed returning to his car after dinner at a local restaurant on Saturday night.
Stanton was approached by a man who was carrying what appeared to be a hatchet.
He was not harmed by the man who has still yet to be found. Police are investigating the incident.
Stanton thanked the Phoenix police department for their efforts. His spokesperson released the following statement from Stanton via email:
As I was walking to my car after dinner, a man, armed with what appeared to be a hatchet, robbed me. I was not hurt. I want to thank the Phoenix Police Department for the very fast response of our officers, and for handling the case with such professionalism. Although incidents like this are scary, I’m undeterred and will be eating again at this local restaurant – one of my favorites – later this week.
Stanton is running for Arizona’s 9th Congressional District, based in Tempe. It has occupied by Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) since 2012, according to ballotpedia.org.
Sinema vacated the seat in order to run for Senate where she is locked in a close battle with Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.).
