ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Authorities say police have clashed with about 150 people who attacked a public bus and shops in a western Athens suburb and that six officers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
The violence occurred Monday night in the Ano Liossia suburb, where clashes have occurred from time to time between police and Greek citizens from the Roma minority.
It was not clear what caused Monday night’s violence, which came as Greek politicians were trying to form a coalition government after Sunday’s national election left no party with a majority in Parliament.
Police said in a statement that the violence started when the attackers began throwing stones at the bus, then smashing the windows of nearby stores. Police arrived at the scene and came under gunfire before ending the violence.
