PHOENIX — Monsoon season officially came to an end last month, but the Phoenix area still faces a decent chance of rain this weekend.

While the Valley will see a sprinkle of rain on Friday, ABC15 meteorologist Iris Hermosillo told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the wet weather will truly ramp up on Saturday.

Some parts of the Valley could see heavier pockets of rain on Saturday, ranging from a quarter to a half inch, with a few spots moving closer to three-quarters of an inch, especially if there are thunderstorms, Hermosillo said.

Hermosillo said the chances of scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase after 9 a.m. and hold steady through the day. The chance of rain will continue into Sunday and will linger into early next week.

But not all portions of the state will have to wait until Saturday for a decent amount of rain: Parts of the southeastern portion of the state could see an inch or more on Friday. The Valley will not see more than a quarter of an inch of rain.

Residents within the Loop 202 corridor will have a 30 percent chance of rain Friday morning, with the best chance of rain occurring around lunch time. The chance of rain will drop to 10 percent Friday afternoon.

The rain this weekend will be caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Sergio interacting with a storm system that will move in from the West, Hermosillo said.

Sergio and Rosa has already made this month one of the wettest ever in Phoenix: There has been 3.09 inches of rainfall so far in October, and Hermosillo said that number will grow through the weekend.

“We are already above our normal amount of rain for this month by nearly a quarter of an inch,” she added.

Hermosillo said the Valley will continue to see fall and winter storms that will move through Arizona from the Southwest and West.

“It’s an interesting pattern right now because we’re also getting some tropical systems in the mix in October,” she said.

“There’s still potential for El Nino development as we head into winter.”
