Authorities say Grand Canyon ranger fired shot during scuffle with suspect

PHOENIX – Authorities said a Grand Canyon National Park ranger fired a gunshot during a scuffle with a suspect who was not wounded by the gunfire.
Park spokeswoman Kari Cobb told The Associated Press that both the ranger and suspect suffered minor injuries during the scuffle.
Cobb said the incident occurred after the ranger responded to a call to authorities, but did not provide more information.
The incident occurred on the South Rim of the park at approximately 1 a.m. on Thursday, according to a press release.
The suspect was hospitalized for assessment before being taken into custody.
The park service was investigating the incident, and the FBI has been notified.
There were no ongoing safety concerns and no impact on park visitor services.
It was the second shooting in Arizona involving a park service ranger in a week.
Last Friday, a man armed with a knife was fatally shot by a ranger at the Canyon de Chelly monument in northeastern Arizona.
