(AP) – The world was a different place the last time Aung San Suu Kyi was in Europe in 1988. The Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union still existed.
Elsewhere that year:
_ The Morris worm became, if not the first computer virus, the first to get widespread attention. It crippled about 6,000 computer systems, which at the time was about one-tenth of the Internet.
_ Panama leader Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega was indicted in the United States on drug smuggling charges.
_ Prozac was introduced to the U.S. market and quickly became a leading treatment for depression.
_ Ben Johnson won the 100m gold at the Seoul Summer Olympics and was later disqualified for taking a steroid.
_ The Oscar for best picture went to “The Last Emperor,” directed by Bernardo Bertolucci.
_ George Michael’s song “Faith” was the No. 1 song on Billboard’s year-end chart.
_ President Ronald Reagan was ending a second term and George H.W. Bush was elected to the White House.
_ The Iran-Iraq War _ also known as the First Persian Gulf War _ ended after eight years.
_ The first trans-Atlantic fiber optic cable was laid with capacity to carry 40,000 telephone calls simultaneously.
_ A Libyan terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103 killed 270 people over Lockerbie, Scotland.
_ There were about 2 million cellphone subscribers in the U.S. Last year there were more than 330 million _ more cellphones than people.
