PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Friday night that it has reopened U.S. 89.

Severe flooding from Tropical Depression Rosa caused the road to give way late Wednesday, leading to a fatal collision.

The flooding cut through a 30-foot section of the highway between Cameron and the U.S. 160. Drivers were forced to take a more than 100-mile detour.

Short-term repairs have been completed so motorists may pass, but only at reduced speeds.

More than 40 ADOT personnel from across the state worked around the clock to haul in and compact 500 cubic yards of material and lay 120 tons of asphalt pavement.

ADOT will continue to assess the situation for long-term repairs and seek reimbursement through the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program.

“It’s testimony to the dedication of so many ADOT personnel, men and women who responded immediately and worked tirelessly, that residents, tourists and commercial vehicles are once again using U.S. 89,” John Halikowski, ADOT director, said in a statement.

“We’re grateful to our partners, including the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Coconino County and Federal Highway Administration, who stepped forward to help keep traffic moving through the region and get this critical work done,” he said.
