Holocaust survivor and scholar Lustiger dies at 88

BERLIN (AP) – Germany’s Central Council of Jews says Holocaust survivor and scholar Arno Lustiger has died at age 88.
Council President Dieter Graumann said Wednesday that Lustiger, who died Tuesday, will be remembered for his research on Jewish resistance to the Nazis and of non-Jews who helped save Jews from the Holocaust.
Polish-born Lustiger survived several Nazi concentration camps and a death march in the final days of the war from an Auschwitz subcamp to another camp before escaping and being rescued by American troops.
After the war he moved to Frankfurt and was a co-founder of its Jewish Community.
Green party leader Claudia Roth said Germany had lost “a great fighter for humanity and democracy” in Lustiger.
His cause of death was not immediately announced.
