CAIRO (AP) – Cairo says it is closely following the case of an Egyptian rights lawyer arrested in Saudi Arabia that has revived decades-old resentment over the treatment of Egyptians working in the oil-rich kingdom.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Amr Rushdi said Tuesday that Cairo is in constant contact with Saudi authorities over the arrest of Ahmed el-Gezawi upon his arrival last week in the Saudi port city of Jiddah. He warned against anti-Saudi media campaigns.
A family member says the lawyer’s arrest followed his conviction in absentia by a Saudi court for insulting the king. El-Gezawi had filed suit in Egypt against Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah over the alleged arbitrary detention of hundreds of Egyptians living in the kingdom.
