PHOENIX — It’s National Rail Safety Week, and Valley Metro wants to remind the public and its 200,000-plus daily riders that walking on light rail tracks is dangerous and potentially deadly.

Valley Metro spokeswoman Susan Tierney said the trains are very quiet as they approach their stations.

“We want to keep people safe,” she said. “So, being aware of your surroundings is really key in order for you to stay safe.”

Tierney said taking short cuts across light rail tracks to a platform is not worth the risk.

“We always advise people to use crosswalks and signalized intersections and to always follow those signals to stay safe,” she said.

“We have signs along the trackway stating that pedestrians are not allowed to cross the tracks at any location except for intersections and signalized crosswalks.”

Incidents involving light rail trains and pedestrians are very low, Tierney said. She credits that to train operators watching closely for pedestrians and vehicles.

“We’re doing what we can to try to keep people safe,” she said. “That’s our top priority.”

We want to hear from you.
