Niger main market ravaged by overnight fire

Apr 5, 2012, 11:09 AM

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) – Officials in Niger’s capital say an overnight fire ravaged the city’s main market.

Firefighting commander Abdoulaye Bako says firefighters battled the blaze all night Wednesday in the heart of Niamey’s market. The fire department did not give a cause for the blaze. Bako says some 500 market shops were destroyed. Police guarded the market Thursday morning to deter looters.

Officials did not say anyone was killed in the fire.
