PHOENIX — Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar may not have the campaign support of most of his siblings, but he does have the support of likely voters in his district, according to a poll released Thursday.
The Republican outdistanced his nearest opponent in the upcoming general election, Dr. David Brill, 57 percent to 25 percent, in a survey from OH Predictive Insights.
Respondents were asked if their district race for Congress was held today, which candidate would they vote for. An overwhelming 210 of the 370 asked chose Gosar.
They were also asked whether an ad backing Brill that featured six of the nine Gosar siblings –all Democrats — made them “more or less likely to vote for Congressman Paul Gosar, or does it make no difference in your vote?”
The ad made no difference to 58 percent. Another 25 percent said they would vote for Gosar because of the ad, and 17 percent said they were less likely to vote for the incumbent.
“You can’t blame a guy down 32 points from the front-runner for trying a more unconventional campaign strategy,” Mike Noble, managing partner and chief pollster for the firm, said in a statement.
“It was a great headline, however it lives in a bubble compared to the actual impact on the race and voting electorate.”
Gosar’s brothers and sisters — Grace, David, Jennifer, Tim, Joan and Gaston — took him to task on health care, jobs and Social Security, among several issues.
The ad closed with the endorsement of Brill.
In further breakdowns of the participants, 61 percent were 55 or older and 51 percent were women.
The automated phone poll was conducted Tuesday and had a plus-minus margin of error of 5.09 percent.
