Top US officials in Algeria to discuss Africa

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) – Algeria’s state press agency has reported that two top U.S. officials have visited the North African country to discuss the fight against terrorism in Africa.
Gen. Carter Ham, commander of Africom, and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson met top Algerian officials Wednesday.
The two discussed the situations in neighboring Mali and Libya, and in Somalia and Sudan, with Abdelkader Messahel, the minister of North African affairs, and also met with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The visit comes after several cities in northern Mali fell to rebel groups, including some with possible links to al-Qaida in North Africa.
In a June visit, Ham expressed worry that weapons from the fighting in Libya could spill across the border.
