Chile defends response to quake, threat of tsunami

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) – Chilean authorities are defending their response to the tsunami threat from Sunday’s 7.1-magnitude earthquake.

Spokesman Andres Chadwick says the government will always be cautious in protecting people.

After the quake hit Sunday night, Chile’s national emergency office issued an evacuation order, then lifted the alert. It re-established the warning after police saw the ocean retreat from shore in the Maule region, worried that the tide could return with deadly force.

An official survey Monday has found only slight damage, even as more than 19 aftershocks rattled central Chile. Fourteen people suffered slight injuries and one elderly woman died of a heart attack. Some buildings in coastal Constitution suffered structural damage.
