PHOENIX – Events to encourage college and high school students to take part in the political process have been planned across Arizona for Tuesday’s National Voter Registration Day.

Oct. 9 is the last day voters can register and be eligible for the Nov. 6 general election.

Student-led climate advocacy group Defend Our Future will be among several organizations taking part in a rally to promote youth voting at Arizona State University.

“It’s a really great way for us to be able to reach out to fellow students and have them understand that it’s part of the civic duty,” Nicholas Petrusek, state director of Defend our Future, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

“If there’s issues that you care about, voting is the biggest way that you can go ahead and make your voice heard on it.”

Angelina Luangphon, an intern with Defend our Future, will also take part in the event at ASU.

“I’m just going to be talking about why I think it’s important to vote and why it’s my first time voting,” she said.

The Phoenix Union High School District will hold registration events at 16 schools. In a press release, the district said around 2,000 of its students will be 18 and therefore eligible to vote for the first time by the upcoming election.

NextGen Arizona will continue its mission of registering, engaging and organizing young voters at college campuses across the state, including Mesa Community College, Pima Community College in Tucson and Arizona Western College in Yuma.
