PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation announced last week that it sold a parcel of land near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for $28.7 million.
The sale of the 21-acre parcel along Interstate 10 is the largest sale of excess property in the department’s history.
Philadelphia-based land developer Exeter 4425-4535 East Elwood LLC beat out seven bidders and won an auction for the parcel, which includes some buildings.
ADOT has owned the property since 2011.
The department plans to use the sale’s proceeds to widen the I-10 between Loop 202 and the Interstate 17 interchange near the airport.
“Our engineers determined how much of the property would be needed for I-10 widening,” Michael Craig, manager of ADOT’s office of property management, said. “The timing was right to sell the excess portion and put those dollars into the upcoming project’s budget.”
The new owner will remove sections of three buildings on the property to free up space for the I-10 improvements.
