Ronald J. Shurer II, a decorated Army veteran with Phoenix ties, will receive the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in combat, the White House announced Friday.
President Donald Trump will present the award to Shurer at an Oct. 1 ceremony.
Shurer is being honored for his actions on April 6, 2008, while serving as a senior medical sergeant in Afghanistan.
On that day, according to a White House press release, Shurer saved lives by treating and helping evacuated multiple wounded soldiers while “using his body to shield them from enemy fire and debris.”
After Shurer was honorably discharged in 2009, he started a career with the Secret Service at its field office in Phoenix.
The native of Washington state has since been assigned to the Special Operations Division and lives in Virginia.
Shurer previously received a Silver Star for his valor during the incident, but it was upgraded to the Medal of Honor after review.
