6.6-magnitude earthquake reported in Vanuatu

GOLDEN, Colorado (AP) – The U.S. Geological Survey says a 6.6-magnitude earthquake has hit the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.

There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no tsunami warning in effect.

The USGS report says the quake hit early Thursday local time, with the epicenter 37 kilometers (23 miles) west of the village of Sola and 443 kilometers (275 miles) north of the capital, Port Vila.

The report says the quake was at a depth was 196 kilometers (122 miles).

The islands are on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
