MADRID (AP) – Spanish authorities are investigating an imam for allegedly inciting violence against women in his weekly sermons.
A Catalonian regional police statement says the imam of Terrassa town mosque called on Muslims to use physical and psychological violence to correct “their wives’ deviations.”
Police said the imam gave “concrete examples of how to hit women, isolate them at home and refuse them sexual relations and other actions.” The statement gave no details of the examples.
The Moroccan-born imam was identified only as Abdeslam L. He was questioned by police Tuesday but refused to give evidence.
La Vanguardia newspaper Wednesday said the case was being studied by prosecutors with a view to possible charges.
